Did you know writing is an exercise in critical thinking? Every writing assignment demands that students think ahead, consider their audience and re-think their wording and organizational structure to make sure their composition meets a specific goal. The objective of good, solid writing is to persuade, inform or explain, to communicate ideas, tell a story or entertain.

Clear and concise writing is a sign of clear thinking. Good writers know how to communicate. They make things easy to understand and they know how to leave out the unnecessary.

Unlike talking, when you write you look for more sophisticated words and expressions to describe what’s on your mind. This helps build a structure that will allow you to express yourself better and communicate complex ideas in a more effective way. If you write daily, you will have a historical record of your thoughts and, who knows, you may end up publishing a book—like I did!
