Your character is what makes people believe in you and is essential both for your personal and professional success. For example, if you make a promise you can’t or don’t keep, your character will be called into question, causing some to believe your word is meaningless. When you lie, you deceive others and lose their respect.
Perhaps it’s time for a character check-up. How are you perceived on and offline? Are you someone who is always trying to help others without seeking anything in return? Are you the one who takes time to be engaging or are you the one who is constantly ramming your products and services down the throats of others? Do you promise more than you can deliver? Do you knowingly steal other people’s ideas and claim them as your own? Do you trash talk your competition? Do you connect with others just for the purpose of elevating your profile?
If your character comes into question and the word gets out, it could result in some negative publicity—which, in turn, could ultimately destroy your credibility. Think of social media as the Better Business Bureau.
Here are some tips on how to maintain good character and give others a reason to want to sing your praises—which will lead to more, positive exposure:
Be Trustworthy
Don’t deceive, cheat, or steal • Be reliable — do what you say you’ll do • Have the courage to do the right thing • Build a good reputation • Be loyal to your customers.
Be Respectful
Treat others with respect; follow the Golden Rule • Be tolerant and accepting of differences • Use good manners, not bad language • Be considerate of the feelings of others • Deal peacefully with anger, insults, and disagreements.
Be Responsible
Do what you are supposed to do • Plan ahead • Persevere: keep on trying! • Always do your best • Use self-control • Be self-disciplined • Think before you act — consider the consequences • Be accountable for your words, actions, and attitudes • Set a good example for others.
Be Fair
Be open-minded; listen to others • Don’t take advantage of others • Don’t blame others carelessly • Treat all people fairly.
Be Caring
Be kind • Be compassionate and show you care • Express gratitude • Forgive others • Help people in need.
Someone once said, “You can easily judge the character of a person by ho he/she treats those who can do nothing for him/her.” Keep that in mind at all times.
